SNEAKER 101

WELCOME TO SNEAKER CULTURE 101

Sneaker culture.

It all started back in the 70’s when iconic designer Tinker Hatfield and Basketball superstar Michael Jordan elevated sneakers from functional to cult status in one history-making collaboration known today as Air Jordan 1. But it wasn’t until Hip Hop and Beat Boys embraced them with their style and dance moves that sneakers became an entrenched part of popular culture.

Mums and Podiatrists everywhere celebrated as these squishy souled foot vessels catapulted into what is today a juggernaut of industry! A pair of Air Jordan 12s worn by Michael Jordan in the infamous ‘flu-game’ where Jordan played while he was sick sold for $104,000 (cough).

R/Conspirators theorize we are all mere pawns in the ultimate ruse to get us into some arch-supporting dorky shoes. However, there’s no denying that these rubbery little bastards have captured our hearts. Which is why designers, rappers and even artists choose the not-so-humble sneaker as a status elevating medium of expression.

So now that we have educated you on the basics behind why you should be obsessed with sneakers (as if you weren’t already!), sit back and enjoy our top 10 breakdown according to the experts* here at THE X CARTEL.

Bon Appetit!
